    Development

Words from the incumbent dean of the Tourism College

    I. Origins of the college

The 21st century is the century of service industries, and among them, the tourism industry has had a considerable economic multiplier effect which has the obvious benefits of creating job opportunities and earning foreign exchange. Therefore, this industry has positively developed internationally. Tourism is a comprehensive service industry with multiple goals and composite functions which need to match up with other relevant industries, such as tourism resources, communications and transportation, the hotel business, food & beverage and entertainment, and other such travel-related industries.

After observing our nations technical and vocational education system for tourism, in general, the scope and division of hospitality and tourism education are not well-defined, and many courses overlap concepts with domestic hospitality. Currently, tourism education is mainly constructed of the three subjects of tourism, hospitality and leisure. The Tourism College of this university, with an educational goal of culture, profession, enterprise and globalization, aims at cultivating management skills in the tourism industry, as well as tour guide talents, abilities in professional airline and transportation services and professional skills in leisure, recreation and games. Furthermore, the college stresses the training of students professional skills in diversified fields, supplemented with professional intelligence, case research, practice research and plan writing, all of which are done through the department of travel management, department of airline and transport services, department of leisure recreation & tourism and the Masters program in transportation and leisure service management, as well as the only master and doctor class of the institute of tourism management in the state. Due to tourism being an industry without limits, its development must necessarily keep pace with international trends.
    II. Development priorities

    1. Set up an integrated teaching and research team with a new service industry as its core

The Tourism College orients its teaching around practical research and emphasizes that knowledge and skill of management will be used in both discussion and research of the practical problems of conducting business in the tourism and leisure industry. It also cultivates professional tourism talents through both theory and practice by combining the universitys industry-university development strategy with information technology to integrate the professional fields of travel, leisure and transportation.

    2. Support and integrate the development of a regional characteristic industry

Special research is planned to fit developmental characteristics into the college, and a resource sharing plan for cross-industry and community cooperation is promoted to implement the principles of a practice first education, with theory as supplementary knowledge. The hope is to realize a three-fold goal of actively settling the issues of both management demand and diagnosis management relevant to tourism, cultivating future management talent and practicing the principle for students that to graduate is to work.

    3. Enhance the industry-university cooperation system of the department and institute of the Tourism College

Besides mutual support in teaching resources, the Tourism College also strengthens the cooperative opportunities of the industry-university plan among teachers of the college. Furthermore, the college even expands to inter-university integration which is conducted jointly by the university with the Taiwan and Singapore offices of LATA to promote teachers and students to obtain an international IATA/UFTAA license and implement talent cultivation in the hospitality and tourism industry via inter-university integration

III. Features of teaching and research
Under the guidance of the above mentioned development ideas and priorities, the departments and institutes of the Tourism College will together adhere to the following development guidelines and form the detailed features of the teaching and research in the whole college:

    1.      Use regional research as a bridge to international standards

    2.      Engage in a research plan to continuously optimize teaching quality

     3. Implement a program with a modular curriculum design

     4. Emphasize equally theory and skill education

    5. Enforce a strict and solid practice system

    6. Emphasize the cultivation of an international vision

With globalization as its guideline, the college wants to improve the abilities of both teachers and students to meet the diversified life and globalized society and to equip them with a mind to both treasure local culture and embrace international convention in order to enhance their international vision and competitiveness. As we enter into the age of globalization, the college encourages students to practice abroad or select a dual degrees system in an overseas sister university to develop an international vision, implement the learning effects of an overseas visiting course, promote international exchange and cooperation and improve the students’ ability in a foreign language and their international vision. Finally, it will achieve the institute’s plan of a university cultivating talent, businesses employing talent and students using their talent.
